Guruprem Singh Khalsa: What intention actually means

Oprah recently put together some of her favourite conversations from her TV show Super Soul Sunday, in a book – called The Wisdom of Sundays. One of these is a conversation with Devon Franklin on the Power of Intention – and it blew me away.

Franklin says that he realised that sometimes we, in the most difficult times in our story, we begin to lose faith.

He says “the truth is, you and I are only in control of two things: how we prepare for what might happen, and how we respond to what just happened. The moment when things actually do happen belongs to God”

Franklin says that if our life is a story then we have to understand what the point of it is. We need to have clarity about what we are supposed to do. What do we believe we’re called to do in this life? This then gives the development of it more shape.

He says if you are not in control of your life, or aware that your life needs developing, and you are just waking up every morning, going to a job, going through the motions, getting your paycheck, then really it’s sort of like being the walking dead”

I wanted to go deeper into this topic and reached out to another of the world’s foremost experts on the Power of Intention, I was lucky enough to have Guruprem Khalsa grant me some time to discuss this in further depth.

Guruprem Singh Khalsa was named ‘Posture Master’ by Yogi Bhajan (Yogi Bhajan brought Kundalini Yoga to the west) He is a Master Yogi and he has been practicing and teaching Yoga for over 30 years. He travels all over the world teaching the tools and rules of Divine Alignment and having your Heart Rule.

It’s really easy to let distractions take you off your course, so your desires get in the way of your true purpose

Guruprem’s interpretation of intention setting

“My interpretation of intention setting has evolved over time. I look at it as being pared with motivation, in order to create the foundational support of a purpose.

The idea of an intention is an energetic thing and has a location in the physical body. The left thigh feeds into the pelvis as your intention energy. The right thigh feeds into the pelvis as your motivation. Your intention and motivation then feed into the sacrum. The idea is that your notion (your belief of what you are to become) is kept in a sacred place”

Guruprems intention setting model

Guruprem came up with a model for intention setting. It starts with Latin words and the root word is spira.

“When we put an ‘a’ with it, we get the word aspire. Meaning what does your heart (not your head) truly long for? Ask yourself if this purpose is truly serving your heart’s desire? Or is it just serving a wish that may not be in your spiritual interest. For example if you work in the world of finance are you just looking to take advantage of the next thing so you can increase your wealth?

If your intention is aligned with your heart, things will start to appear – conspira or conspire. Things will come into your life in tune with what the beat of your heart desires - transpira or transpire.

Though, in order to receive, you need to eliminate the unnecessary things within you – expira or expire. This then sets you up to receive the inspira or inspiration. You now have some space that you can fully utilise to be inspired.

The goal is then to prospira or prosper. This means more than your bank account. Every cell in your body is meant prosper. In order to achieve this there is one more spira between inspira and prospira – perspira or perspire. In other words you’ve got to put the work in! You have all the pieces. You now just need to put some work into it.

In a nutshell, if you keep a relationship with the depths of your heart, the domain of your aspira, put the work in then you will prospira.

Remain mindful of the things that can break your spirit

The latin word for this is despira or despair. Don’t allow yourself to fall into despair. The thing that comes up before you hit despair is doubt. You’ve got to constantly be able to beat doubt with faith. To do this you go back to basics. What is your intention? What’s your motivation? What’s your notion? What’s your purpose? How is it serving your aspira? If you don’t get these pieces right then this can lead to dread and then you’ve fallen into the domain of depression. This is why you have to be so wary of doubt. To combat this you have to just show up! Show up at class, meetings or wherever you’re needed.

Make sure your intention is serving the right master

Guruprem went on to raise the point, it’s really easy to let distractions take you off your course, so your desires get in the way of your true purpose. This is one of the reasons in Christianity, Jesus said that a camel can pass through the eye of a needle easier than a rich man can get into heaven. The reason is that most people seek wealth to keep them well distracted rather than actually going very deep into themselves.

Having said that, if a person is a servant of their soul, whatever they have, he would want them to a add a zero to it. He would want them to have that much more because they will know how to use it for a greater purpose.

One of the reasons Guruprem admires Warren Buffet is that he lives a really simple life in comparison to his wealth. Early on in his career Buffet realised that he loved earning money so that his wife could spend it on noble causes.

A final thought

Guruprem left me with this thought: The whole idea of intention setting and purpose and how you manifest it is to achieve contentment. Ask yourself if what you are doing is to your hearts content.
